Some fast times in Doha overnight, as some huge names return to international athletics. Our flash recap is below:

Men’s 1500m

The 2019 world 1500m champ Timothy Cheruiyot commenced his 2021 campaign where he left off in 2020, by winning. The 3:28 runner clocked 3:30.48. He beat home Australian Stewart McSweyn by just over a second (3:31.57). The race went out super fast with splits of; 400m (54.30), 800m (1:50.77),and 1200m (2:48). That’s a banging fast first 2 laps. Cheruiyot was too strong over the final 150m, with the Kenyan pulling away from McSweyn. Australia’s Matthew Ramsden and Ryan Gregson (now running for Puma) finished at the back of the field. It would have been mouth watering to see either Jye Edwards or Oliver Hoare in this race….

Women’s 3000m Steeple

Five women ran sub 9:10, Doha once again delivers as a Mecca for fast times when it comes to the steeple. Norah Jeruto from Kenya was the victor. Australia’s Genevieve Gregson finished in 12th (9:35).

Men’s HJ

Unfortunately Australian Brandon Starc missed the Olympic 2:33 standard. The Australian HJ record holder (2:36) needs to find his form that took him to the pointy end of world rankings, in previous years. Russian Ilya Ivanyuk won in 2.33.

Men’s 800m

It was Kenya 1st and 2nd in the 800m, with the UK’s Daniel Rowden in 3rd. Wyclife Kinyamal posted a world leading 1:43.91, with the top four finishes all sub-1:45. The rabbit took them through the first lap in 50:29, and the first 600m in 1:17.11. A strung out affair from the gun, check out the footage below.  Donovan Brazier was sorely missed, will be great to see him back in these truly international meets.

Women’s 800m

World 1500 champ, Faith Kipyegon, won for the second straight year in Doha, winning in 1:58.26 – flogging the field. The first lap split was 59.11, with the 600m in 1:30.  With 200m to go Kipyegon kicked away and gapped the field down the home straight.

Men’s 400m

Michael Norman from the USA clocked the win in 44.27, he now owns the world leading time for 2021, and has to be a favourite for Tokyo. Kirani James was 4th in 44.61.
