Written by Len Johnson Not many people could entitle an autobiography My Life in Athletics as appropriately as did Mel Watman in 2018. Even fewer could do so without the slightest hint of pretentiousness and in the complete absence of outstanding athletic achievement. Yet Mel Watman, sometime club steeplechaser and mid-pack...
A column by Len Johnson This columnist has always been a big fan of the Rampaging Roy Slaven and H.G. Nelson observation that “too much sport is barely enough”. But, I wonder, what about when five of the world’s biggest marathons – Berlin, London, Chicago, Boston and New York – are...
I checked the impression that 2021 has been a good year for Australian records by reviewing the pace of national record-breaking in recent years. The figures seem to confirm the impression: Eight athletes set a total of 14 Australian records in 2021, a higher figure for both number of record-breakers and number of records than for any of the previous three years.
Written by Callen Goldsmith (science graduate and avid runner). Remember back to when I was talking about protein? I briefly touched on gut microbiota, but since there’s at least as many of them as our own body cells if not more, they probably deserve their own article or two. The gut...
This year sees a very classy field. In the men's we have a number of the all-time fastest marathoners competing. Favourite for the race would be Birhanu Legese, who was second behind Kenenisa Bekele in his epic near world record in Berlin two years ago, where he ran 2.02.48. He hasn't done much at major championship level, but has some very fast times under his belt and is consistent.

When it comes to training, are you a simplifier or an optimizer? Simplifiers look for the easiest way to get a task done, and accept that there are some costs or lost opportunities that come with their approach. Optimizers continually tweak, adjust and update their plans in order to get the best possible outcome.
