Great Australian Run Report: Saturday, December 13 2008
In the last weekend of November, the Great Run series finally came to Australia with the inaugural Great Australian Run in Melbourne. Organisers brought with them a very high class field. Take a look:...
Ryan Gregson is the new Bekele: Sunday, October 5, 2008
Ryan Gregson is the new Bekele. It's official. Why do I say this? It's his kick. A year or two ago Gregson didn't have that kind of amazing kick. But now at 200m to go, he flies. And I'm not just talking about a bit of speeding up; this is world class speed....
Respect for the Marathon: Tuesday, September 23, 2008
I now understand what some people have known for years - just how hard the marathon really is....
Considering the 100m: Thursday, September 18, 2008
We are in the process of a 100m revolution. Don't believe me? Let me hit you with some stats...
Best Performances of the Games: Latest column
Lets take one last look back on one hell of a superb Olympics. Edward covers all the highlights: Bolt, Bekele and Dibaba, Merritt, Jelimo, Wanjiru, Ritzenhein, Rothlin, McLellan, Abdi, Mekhissi-Benabbad, Jamaican Men's 4x100m Team and more....
Can Anyone Beat Bekele?: Friday, August 22, 2008
Can anyone beat Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele? That's the question a lot of people are asking themselves, given his domination in major races over 10000m, and to a lesser extent 5000m. Let's just consider this for a minute. He's the world record holder over both distances. He has won gold over 10000m in two Olympics. And he's capable of closing with a final lap of close to 50 seconds.....
Athletics in Australia is NOT a Joke: Wednesday, August 20, 2008
This is in response to a post by Wayne Goldsmith about the state of athletics in Australia. But don't be taken in. Wayne is heavily critical of athletics in Australia, and claims that 'everyone' thinks it's a joke. But he's wrong. This is a reply, based on a comment I have left him (you can read the original comment on his site, if he posts it). It talks about a lot of issues which are highly relevant within the sport; including why we shouldn't expect to be as dominant as we are in, say, swimming; and what can be done about it....
Haile Gebrselassie: The Greatest Ever: Tuesday, August 19, 2008
Haile Gebrselassie is the greatest ever distance runner the world has ever seen. Sunday's 10000m final confirmed that for me. Forget that Kenenisa Bekele broke the Olympic record, and clocked a 53 second final lap to win in just over 27 minutes. Haile was the star of the night, and his sixth place was the highlight.:...
The Future: Usain Bolt: Saturday, August 16, 2008
Usain Bolt is the greatest sprinter we have ever seen. Let me just put that out there, although I'm sure most people won't need much convincing. He has just demolished a 100m field of incredible quality, and made a new world record of 9.69 look easy. At 21, there really seems to be no limit to what he can do.:...
Beijing Olympic Preview - The Top Clashes and Events: Wednesday, August 7, 2008
Edward covers it all with this comprehensive Olympic athletics preview : Asafa Powell vs. Tyson Gay vs. Usain Bolt (100m), Jeremy Wariner vs. LaShawn Merritt (400m), Craig Mottram vs. The Field (5000m), Haile Gebrselassie vs. Kekenisa Bekele vs. The Rest (10000m), Men's Marathon (too many people to name), Dayron Robles vs. Liu Xiang (110m Hurdles), Pamela Jelimo vs. Janeth Jepkosgei vs. The Rest (800m), Meseret Defar vs. Tirunesh Dibaba vs. Russia (5000m)...
Value Bets for Beijing Athletics: Sunday, August 10, 2008
With an event so varied and hard to pick as Olympic level athletics, with so many competitors, there are bound to be some good value bets hidden amongst the short priced favourites and outsiders. For those inclined to have a punt, here's a guide to some of the best value picks in the athletics competition:...
Why We Should Continue Funding Sport: Saturday, August 9, 2008
In an editorial in the Herald Sun yesterday (see it here), it was suggested that Australia spends too much money on sport. How could we send such a big team to the Olympics (434 athletes) when other nations much bigger than us send far fewer? Consider India, says columnist Andrew Bolt. If they sent the same proportion of their population to the Games as we did, they would send 25000 people.:...
Russian Athletes Suspended: Sunday, August 3, 2008
Seven Russian female athletes have been banned from competition due to tampering with tests. DNA from the samples taken in out of competition tests last year, did not match the samples taken at the Osaka World Champs. This is huge news given who the athletes involved:...
Why We Will Not Boycott Beijing: Saturday, August 2, 2008
To kick things off, let me start by outlining why the debate on Olympic boycotts is useless and damaging to sport. ....
