NZ's Jake Robertson Opens Season in Style
New Zealand brothers and World cross representatives Jake and Zane Robertson opened their 2011 track season last night at Global Athletics meet in Nijmegen, Netherlands.
21-year-old Jake eclipsed his previous 5000m PB by 10 seconds posting a time of 13.22. 38 a time well inside the IAAF ‘B’ standard for both the 2011 Daegu World Championships and the 2012 London Olympics. Athletics New Zealand and the NZ Olympic Committee have yet to release the NZ qualification standards for the Olympics. However Jake will look to chase the 'A' Standard being 13:20.00 over the next few weeks while racing in Europe, before heading back to Kenya and departing with his brother who is now living and training in Ethiopia.
At the same meet Jakes twin Zane contested the 1500m but was unfortunately was not able to mix it with the winners “I was tactically not smart I was a little bit to far back today which was a problem for me in the end” said Zane running a time of 3.43. 44. Craig Miller from the US taking the honors winning in 3.37.56, just in front of British runner Nick McCormick.
