Kevin Batt: RT Journals

This has been a great season for me having qualified to run for Australia in boththe World Cross Country and World Junior Track 5000m. After the World Cross Country in Poland Bydgoszcz in March where I finished a hard fought 39th, I went to Ireland for 2 weeks after to see relatives and check out the running scene over there. I had a break from training.  I met up with some Irish runners and had a few easy runs to keep the legs ticking over.

I came back to
Australia keen and ready to get back into training. Since then I have been building the kilometres and trying to put some good sessions together.

I have just moved from living at Ryan Gregson’s house with his family at Bulli. I was there for a year and it was great experience. It was a fun year and good to live with a good mate and good family and where life just revolves around training. I have learnt a lot about all the little 1 percenters that make all the difference. My coach Ian Hatfield has been an invaluable support over the last year that I have been coached by him.

I have been floating back and forth from Central Coast to Sydney over the last few weeks. I had a week’s training at Centennial Park living with Toddy Wakefield and Sam and a few days at James Kaan’s place. Brett Robinson has made the trip up from Canberra for a week and joined us for some solid sessions also. It was good to mix up the training in different environments. Keeps me keen and it is interesting to see how different groups work-out.

Since then I have moved into an apartment with David Ricketts in Wollongong. Itis a whole new experience for me. I am still battling with the cooking part and there always seems to be something to do when you are living out of a home. Plates to wash, a never ending list! But the freedom is good.

Recent races included the Mothers day classic 4k.  I got a win with a time of 11.33. I also ran in the NSW 4k Cross country relays in Miranda a great mud filled day it was. Kembla joggers finished a 3rd and I ran 11.37 got 2nd quickest leg of the day which gives me confidence going forward. I also raced a pre-departure 5000m in Newcastle, which was quite a disappointing run. However, I hope to run sub 14:25 very soon, which is the pre-departure qualifying time.(Editors note: Kev ran a 14:20 at a pre departure meet in a virtual solo time trial, congratulations)

In a normal week of training I am doing 110-120 k. This includes 35-60 minutes of jogging each afternoon. 3 sessions a week of either 1k, 2k reps, Hr Monitor thresholds, and a few sprints to keep nippy, one hill session a week, Gym and Core Exercises and each week I get a massage to keep body in check.

I'm currently working as a lifeguard at Wollongong URAC University Pool as a Pool Lifeguard. I have good managers who luckily understand my training and race commitments and allow me to have the time off from work.

The training is all coming together with no problems and getting back into a routine at the moment. Keen to hit the track in Canada for the World Juniors this July. My aim is hopefully to break 14 minutes.
