Heidi Gregson RT Journal: The season so far…

The outdoor track season is well under way, and although I’ve had to work through some struggles, I’ve still got high hopes for the NCAA Championships.
I ran my first proper 1500m of the season at Mt. Sac Relays in California. I was hoping for a big PB as my training had been going great and the race had a lot of depth, including Shalane Flanagan. I ended up clocking a 4.21.59, which was particularly disappointing considering my expectations.
On the bright side, I was able to see a few familiar faces that I hadn’t seen in years. Aside from Matt Bayley, who I see on a daily basis at Iona, I bumped into Todd Wakefield, Kevin Batt and Matt Coloe. It was also a good break to get away from the New York weather for a bit, reminded me a little of the Sydney sunshine I miss so much.
My next race was at Penn Relays in Philadelphia. I was in the Open mile, and ran 4.42.16, which equates to a 4.21.29 1500m. I don’t know what it is about 4.20/21 this season, (I ran two 4.41 miles during Indoor), but the consistency is killing me! The race went out slow until about 1000m mark and I was in a good position until about 500m to go– I’m not a big fan of clocking 62’s for the final lap. K
Straight after my own race was the USA vs. the world Men’s Distance Medley Relay. It was great to see the boys run an amazing race, although I did look a little out of place screaming for Australia in a stand full of Yanks.
In two days I will be racing another 800m at Princeton and I’m looking to improve on 2.07.10 PB from the year before. A quick 800m will a great set up for the first round of the NCAA Championships for the East Region in Indiana at the end of the month.
