A Good Start To The Season: By Pirrenee Steinert

posted by rtross on January 13, 2010, 2:40pm

I had a great introduction to my racing season with a win in the womens feature sprint race at the famous Bay Sheffield in SA. The Bay Sheffield is always a great event to be apart of. Having a win in my home town in front of family and friends was amazing.

Its great to be able to race in some sprints. Although I specialize in the 400m I have always loved to sprint. Thankfully now that my body is behaving itself I am now able to venture back into the 200m and some short sprint races in the pro events.

During the last couple of months of training to my delight I have been able to endure not only some speed training but also some sprint racing. I am currently looking forward to racing next week in the 200m in Canberra. Not only am I looking to run some fast, competitive times in this event but just by doing some fast racing it will be fantastic for my 400m event.

Training is continuing to go well. With few interruptions during my winter training I am set to start off my 2010 athletic season. It is certainly set to be a big one. With many races starting next week until end of April there will not be too much rest. But this is the time where we athletes get to show off all our hard work and dedications to the previous months of grueling training which we undergo 6 days of the week. This is the fun part of the season.we finally get to race and achieve the goals in which we have set ourselves.

My major athletic goal for 2010 is to qualify for the individual 400m event for the Commonwealth games team. There is still much work to be done to achieve this but this is certainly a realistic goal for myself.

Looking back the 2009 season was amazing for myself and full of surprises. Most of my goals were achieved and I represented Australia in the womens 4x400m team. How did this happen?? The 2009 season has just proved to me what I have always believed in. No matter how bad things can get and how hopeless they can seem. If you want something bad enough and you stay fiercely focused on what you want, work hard at it everyday, you will achieve!

Aside from the track side of my athletics I am still working towards the modeling dreams I have for my sport. I am constantly scouring for modeling events that I can involve myself in. In 2009 I was involved in a couple of body/figure competitions, I managed some New Balance modeling jobs and with all of this managed to get some great contacts for future work but also some sponsorships.

I am delighted to now be sponsored by New Balance. I am very proud to be sponsored by these guys but also being sponsored by them will certainly contribute to my season being an even better one.

Reflecting on the past: By Lisa Weightman

There’s something about the Christmas break that makes me feel lucky to be who I am. Every Christmas my sister (Jodi) and I would head to Nan and Pa’s house in Nagambie (Victoria). Swimming non-stop, sprinting down the 70metre yard into the river and back up hours later for replenishment. Post replenishment stop, we’d set the clock for the dreaded hour until we’d be allowed to swim again.

Over the break we’d both turn a year older and embarrassingly so I’d cry when it came time to blow out my candles! Perhaps even when I was only 4 I knew getting old wasn’t a good thing!

As my passion for running surfaced “Gambies” became a training retreat and continues to be a great time for family moments and lots of laughs. It is time at “Gambies” that gives me time to put perspective into my life, to enjoy some balance swayed more toward play than work for a moment, a time to be thankful for what we have and a time to reflect on what has past.

It is a common trait of those focusing on goals well into the future to continue moving thought to the next goal without taking time to reflect and celebrate the achievements to date. I am guilty of that on most occasions…ticking off each session, each race and each personal best because my thoughts are on “what’s next”. It is time to reflect…

Reflecting on 2009 I could not be happier. Apart from tweaking my race execution in the Australian 5,000m early in the year and avoiding hills at the time of my second hamstring tear I wouldn’t change a thing.

Dick had the perfect formula all year and had me running personal bests in the 3,000m (time trial), 5,000m, 10,000m, half marathon and marathon. Through Dick and running every mile with Lachlan I learnt a lot about testing the boundaries. Boundaries which were mountains a few years ago, we obliterated in training.
Through Dick’s meticulous preparation and Lac’s watchful eye on our daily workouts it has been a fantastic year. I very fond memories of Lachlan, Dick and my adventures at KaDeWe in Berlin!

With the support of my new agent Derek Froude and looking glam thanks to my new sponsor Adidas it is time for some new adventures!! After a great start to the 2010 training year in Nagambie, Lac and “Goa” are back at work for Nab and IBM respectively and preparing for an exciting year ahead. The focus is on improving the half marathon personal best, then the marathon personal best, having some fun experiences along the way and finally achieving the ultimate goal…running the Commonwealth Games marathon with a medal in mind.

Nephew Thomas at 2 started calling Lisa “Goa” after her Mum coached him to say “Go Lisa” when she was running on the television at Beijing. The coaching didn’t go too well as “Go Lisa” became “Goa” and has since stuck. Despite now being a chatterbox, Thomas still calls Lisa “Goa”…it looks like it has stuck!!

I am looking forward to sharing my thoughts via this forum. I would like to thank everyone who has been in touch for their loving wishes and excitement about Commonwealth Games selection.

Sonia What do you do when you can’t run as fast or as far as you would like to , well you still try to run as fast and as far as you can, but you have to realise that it won’t be as fast or as far as you used to run.

This is a dilemma that I have found myself in the past few years and only now nearly 4 years down the track have I finally figured out that no matter how hard I try or how many times my mind tries to tell me otherwise, unless I run in some obscure race over some obscure distance it is unlikely that I will run another PB.
I can’t really pick out my last true race, it seems so long ago. I supppose the London Marathon 2005 was my last PB (2:29.01) and even then I thought I should’ve gone quicker…surely there was time left to do this in the future. So I trained like I was going to run in the Olympics or World Championships, I ran 100mile weeks and 3 sessions a week trying to keep up with Great athletes Benita Johnson and Craig Mottram. I went to altitude for my holidays, while the kids were still at school, Saint Moritz, Falls Creek, Ballarat, Flagstaff…….surely some of these magical places would rub off on me and I would get out there for one last Hurrah. The Beijing Olympics loomed in the distance and what a dream it would have been to run into an Olympic stadium at the end of an Olympic marathon but it wasn’t to be. Athens 2004 would remain as my final run for Ireland on the track and what an emotional race that was for me all part of my Olympic roller coaster carreer.

After years of putting in the miles and the hard efforts the injuries started to take a toll on my body, it was like putting a cake in the oven everytime I went to race. Even though all the ingredients were there they can’t have been mixed right or maybe the key ingredient “REST” never really got a look in and the cake always came out a bit flat and not the result I was looking for. It has been said and I absolutely agree the reward isn’t always what you get but what you put in, this is so true I enjoyed every long run every session, pushing my body to the limit but eventually it is difficult to explain to your friends and family and you realise it is time to take a step backwards and take a look at the big picture, there were too many pieces of the jigsaw missing, time to move on to the next stage of my life.
Sonia
I still like to go for a run most days but realise that I must think of it as fitness, enjoyment, a great start to everyday. I tell myself this everytime I get myself back up running to an hour, but then the sessions start creeping in, a few hill reps here and there and then the dreaming begins……

Earlier this year I was in Dublin for the Great Ireland Run, I wasn’t running at the time apart from a jog around in the kids race and even that was a few day spre-mature…..but I couldn’t resist it. I had just swam a mile in one of the few 50m swimming pools in Ireland and mentioned this in passing. Next thing you know I was signed up for the Great North swim, a mile race in lake Windermere, a beautiful spot in the Lake District. Later I found out that swim wouldn’t take place until September, and by that time I was back up running a lot more than I was swimming so a crash course in swimming began in September, so that I could at least go the distance. Earlier in the year I had run just under 40minutes for 10km so figured under 40minutes for the mile would be just fine. I was pretty nervous beforehand, not really about the swim but about this little time barrier that I had announced at the start of the race. I got around without being kicked or splashed too much and climbed out of the lake and ran across the line in a speedy (for me) 32minutes…..within minutes of finishing I was talking about crashing through the 30minute barrier…..PB’s were back on my mind again.

I am still running more than I am swimming but using my new found swimming challenge as something to give me a break from running everyday and feel like I am doing something good for myself. I am planning to run in the Great Australia run on November 29th in Melbourne, but the day before that I will run with my kids in the family fun run over 2km, we have been training once a week for this with some kids after school .
Sonia
On Tuesdays and Thursday’s I have been at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) in the fantastic open air 50m pool. I am in the water before the sun is up and it is the best part of the day for me to see the sun rising and spot some hot-air balloons in the distance while ploughing through the water.
The Great Australia Run is the big challenge though, last year I was out injured so walked around in just under 2 hours, this year I would like to get under an hour for the 15km, but a mini target within that goal is under 40 minutes for 10Km then push on to the finis. The hardest part will be getting to the start line and not leaving everything in the parks on the daily run. It won’t be a PB but it will be mission accomplished if I cross that finish line under an hour .
