Time period in Europe?

I spent a total of 6 weeks in europe

Base whilst in Europe?

I was based in Mannheim, Germany for the first 10 days with the under 20 tour. The next month was spent in Teddington just outside of London.

What races do you target and how did they go?

I had 5 races while in Europe, two on the Junior tour and three when I was with the other Melbourne Track Club athletes.

The race results were:

Hessen Junior Meet 800, 1st 1.48.38
Mannheim Junior Gala Germany 1500, 1st 3.43.42
Delogu Memorial Sardinia 800, 4th 1.49.29
Savo Games Finland 800, 4th 1.47.34
Joensuu Games Finland 1500, 4th 3.40.96

Most enjoyable experience?

Just hanging out with the guys was the best experience of Europe. Going out for coffees, shopping in Kingston and the Arms on a Monday night. Also the time spent in Finland was quite a rollercoaster but an incredible experience.

What was the lowest point?

At one stage at Park road I got rather sick, food poisoning kept me out of action for a few days.

Lessons learnt during this European Experience?

I learnt much whilst abroad. One of the most important lessons I learnt was that there is no substitute for good mileage, it really is the key to competing at your best. By living with guys like Jeff Riseley, Greggo (Ryan Gregson), Collis Birmingham and Benny (St Lawrence) you really get to see how professional athletes compose themselves, and it now gives me some idea of what it takes to compete at that level.

Time period spent in Europe?

5 weeks.  It will be 8-9 weeks by the end of my trip

-          Base whilst in Europe?

Teddington, London with Melbourne Track Club Athletes

-          What races did you target and how did they go?

My main target for this trip is the World Championships in Korea. I haven’t competed yet.

-          Most enjoyable experience?

Racing in the Monaco Diamond league. Off the track the amazing travel, shopping and food I am able to enjoy across Europe. I also love training in the sunshine at this time of year over here.

-          What was the lowest point?

No real low to report as yet. Everyday as an athlete has it’s challenges with ups and down but I take on as they come along.

-          Lessons learnt during this European experience?

My biggest lessons were learnt in my first year over here and I still follow them.

Treat your base like home, be comfortable, don’t do anything different to home and don’t ever trust a pacemaker.

Time period spent in Europe?

So far it’s been 4 months but it will be 7 months by the time I leave my home here in Hamburg.

Base whilst in Europe?

Hamburg Germany and London

What races did you target and how did they go?

Targeted a BMC (British Milers Club) at Watford and a meet in Sollentuna, Sweden.  Unfortunately I got injured so I did not finish either races.

Most enjoyable experience?

Would say this year watching the diamond leagues as I didn’t get to race.

What was the lowest point?

Being injured

Lessons learnt during this European experience?

Do everything you can to stay injury free.  Keep to your routine and train smart.  There is no need to do anything differently that you wouldn’t do back in Australia.

Time period spent in Europe?

So far, 1 month and a bit...will end up being over 2 months

Base whilst in Europe?

Mostly Gavirate, Italy..at the new AIS training centre there. At the moment though I'm in London.

What races did you target and how did they go?

I did two 400ms, one in Pergine, Italy and one in Gent, Belgium. Ran a PB for my first race - 2nd in 53.16, and was happy with the other, as I won in 53.84.

Most enjoyable experience?

Riding up a mountain in Italy over looking a lake for 20mins in a metal, open-roof cable car, in the rain AND a lightning storm.

What was the lowest point?

When the cable car stopped.

Lessons learnt during this European experience?

Make a routine and keep it as normal as possible. It's good to get out and be a bit of a tourist, but don't over do it! Also, only take essentials...30kgs of luggage is not worth it.
