Sally Pearson (Qld) has confirmed she will attend the Sydney Track Classic, despite being forced to withdraw from the women’s 100m and 200m at the meet after suffering a Grade 1 hamstring injury while training on the Gold Coast.

Athletics Australia remain hopeful that the Olympic champion will be available to compete in Australia later in the domestic season at the Qantas Melbourne World Challenge and the Australian Athletics Championships next month.

“Obviously I am very disappointed. I was genuinely looking forward to competing at the Qantas Australian Athletics Tour in Sydney and being able to run for the many Australian fans that have followed me so closely across the Olympic year and into 2013,” Pearson said.

“The Sydney Track Classic is shaping into a fantastic meet and I will still be coming down to be involved. While I won’t be there to run, I will be there to take part in some of the many activities for fans, as well as to watch the many impressive athletes who will compete including my Australian Flame teammates like Mitch (Watt) and Jared (Tallent) and athletes from overseas such as Val (Adams) and Sunette (Viljoen).

“Being in the stand and involved in the event presentation will give me a chance to interact with people in a way that I haven’t before and I suppose that is a positive that I can take out of a less than ideal situation.”

The Sydney Track Classic will be held at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday 9 March, with tickets available for purchase HERE.

The first of three meets on the Qantas Australian Athletics Tour, the Sydney Track Classic features a bounty of Australian athletics stars competing alongside international charges including Valerie Adams (NZL, shot put),Sunette Viljoen (RSA, javelin), Steve Lewis (GBR, pole vault) and Calesio Newman (USA, 100m, 200m).
